Kearny County Hospital (KCH) began its partnership with The DAISY Foundation in July 2025 to recognize nurses who demonstrate extraordinary compassion and dedication. The DAISY Award is an international program established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, whose family created the foundation after being moved by the exceptional care he received from nurses.

In December of 2025, KCH Registered Nurse, Ashley Orosco, was selected as KCH’s first DAISY award honoree. In keeping with the DAISY tradition, Ashley received the Healer’s Touch Sculpture, a DAISY Pin, an award certificate and cinnamon rolls.

The nomination submitted for Ashley read: “On the following dates I arrived at this hospital for a scheduled induction. I met my day nurse on Friday who was named Ashley. After several failed attempts to start labor Ashley was extremely hopeful and helpful, providing a peanut ball, encouraging me to get moving and to keep trying as she really wanted me to have a vaginal delivery. During these two long days she repeatedly checked on me and made sure I was as comfortable as I could be. When complications arose on Saturday she worked quickly to make sure me and my baby’s heart rate got back to normal. Before being wheeled into the OR for surgery she explained everything and again made light out of the situation. When my baby was born she cleaned him off and introduced him to me as I was shaking uncontrollably on the operating table. While recovering in our room she constantly checked on me. She helped me get my baby to latch for the first time and encouraged me to keep trying even when I would get extremely discouraged I was not doing well. She would come into the room and help me get him to latch and kept showing me new ways to breastfeed. I grew close with Ashley during these days after an extremely traumatic experience. Ashley is the definition of what a nurse should be and should be recognized for her work ethic and compassion towards her patients.”

Kearny County Hospital will select two DAISY honorees each year. Ceremonies will take place in June for nominations received December through May, and in December for nominations received June through November.

Nurses from Kearny County Hospital, High Plains Retirement Village, and the Family Health Center can be nominated by patients, families, physicians, or co‑workers. All nominations are blinded and reviewed by the Patient Resident & Family Advisory Council to ensure a fair and meaningful selection process.

The hospital encourages patients, families, and staff to continue nominating nurses who go above and beyond in providing quality, compassionate, healthcare services for our family, friends, and neighbors.
